Return to Fes

Last weekend on a day trip to Fes (my favorite), we walked through the old medina, ate a delicious lunch and met an old friend.

First stop, food! Step out from the 9th century medina and into this gorgeously decorated space.

This was the appetizer of a variety of Moroccan salads. Then there was chicken couscous and grilled lamb. Of course by the time I remembered to take a picture, there was only bones and couscous left.

Lanterns!

Brass district of the old medina.

River that splits old Fes.

For over a month now, we have been spoiled with sweet clementines everywhere!

Fes, lower tannery is being refurbished and renovated for preservation of this UNESCO historical site. It's the first time it's had any sort of upkeep for over 1,100 years.

We came here to visit our friend, Abdellatif, who works in the tannery as a tour guide. When my family was here last July, we found a leather jacket for my dad. They recreated the jacket on display to my dad's size in 4 hours at the tannery and delivered it to us (1.5 hours away) that night. Incredible! Abdellatif was the one who delivered the jacket. He's the man! (and the tailor is, too!)

Photo taken in July: Vats for cleaning, dying, softening (pigeon poop) leather. Original process is still used.

Tall guy (Dave) on a little street. Yes, that's a street in the old medina.

In Al Attarine Madrasa (school), in Fes, (1325). Beautiful plaster work and tiles in background.
